Message from the Province Polemarch
My Brothers,
If Santa Claus was my Brother and belonged to the Wichita Alumni Chapter he would probably be Brother Dale Diggs. While we were in Wichita for the CRWLC, Brother Diggs hosted dinner for the Province Board of Directors at Palace Diggs (Palace Diggs was designed by our Past Province Polemarch Charles McAfee, an architect by trade) and it is about the size of the North Pole. Dinner was prepared by Silhouette Cokie Diggs and hosted by the members and Silhouettes of the Wichita Alumni Chapter in a style that only Santa and Mrs. Claus could. The atmosphere was sheer Kappa elegance.
If Santa Claus was my Brother and belonged to the Omicron Zeta Chapter, he would most likely be Brother Marcus Barnett. While attending the Colorado Polemarchs meeting in Denver last month we visited with Brother Barnett at the local hospital. I had a chance to meet his parents who were in from Tulsa, Oklahoma. It truly was my pleasure. As you may recall, Brother Barnett had an organ transplant in his recent past and is fighting the battle of his life, for life. But despite his personal battles he finds time to give what he can to Kappa. Surely Brother Barnett would make a great Santa Claus.
If Santa Claus was my Brother and belonged to the Tulsa Alumni Chapter he would be Brother Robert Isaac Mayes, Sr. . . . Hell, Brother Mayes IS Santa Claus and he's got the suits to prove it!!! A few years ago, our Kappa Klaus Mayes scuttled down our Province chimney and left us with the Twenty-Five Year Membership Pin Program. I wonder what's in his bag this year?
If Santa Claus was my Brother and belonged to the Beta Nu Chapter he would most likely be our Junior Province Vice Polemarch Keaton Strong. As a matter of fact, anyone who loves to give so much to Kappa would make a great Kappa Klaus.
If Santa Claus was my Brother and a member of the Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter he would have to be Brother Glen A. Fields who is always checking his list twice, and has delivered the Province a wonderful gift this year, a new undergraduate chapter at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs which will include Colorado College and the United State Air Force Academy.
If Santa Claus was my Brother and a member of the Muskogee Alumni Chapter he would have to be Brother Alexander "Bo" Springs. And if Santa Claus was a member of the Omaha Alumni Chapter he would be Brother Elmer J. Crumbley. And if Santa belonged to the Oklahoma City Alumni Chapter he's beyond a shadow of a doubt Cattleman, Brother Richard E. James.
According the National Interfraternity Conference they have estimates that both members of fraternities and sororities volunteering by donating hours annually to charitable activities is around 10 million volunteer-hours. In the Fraternal Law Periodical there were a couple of other items of interest about which I'll have our General Counsel go into detail with respect to how our fraternity is impacted. The points I'm most interested in are:
ATTENTION Undergraduate Brothers! Undergraduates will be featured in the February 2003 Journal!!! Kappa Scholars and Campus Leaders will be saluted in a feature story, and college athletes will be included in the Kappas in Sports section. Kappa Scholars (with a minimum 3.3 grade point average), Campus Leaders (with a minimum 2.75 grade point average and documented leadership experiences), and college athletes should submit written profiles and photographs to the Journal Editor, Brother Keflyn X. Reed, 2381 Willowdale Street, Mobile, AL 36605. The deadline is January 5, 2003. Photographs in business attire should be submitted for Kappa Scholars and Campus Leaders. (You may take passport photos at places like Kinko's.) Athletes may submit photographs in uniform or in business attire. You may also download a copy of the application on KappaAlphaPsi.com at http://www.kappaalphapsi.com/journal/SAL.pdf.
![]() History Korner By Berry H. Pitts, III - Province Historian The recent painful words and Freudian slip on the part of Mississippi Republican Senate majority leader, Senator Trent Lott, gives us time to reflect on why our great fraternity was founded and the environment under which it was founded. Not only does the Senator's hateful remark conjure up thoughts of hidden racism among our political leaders, but begs the question - did he (Senator Lott) say what others in Congress are really thinking? Allow me to refresh your memories on what Senator Lott said during a December 7th celebration for retiring and former segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond (R) of South Carolina, who in 1948 ran for President on the platform supporting a poll tax, lynching, and segregation of African Americans. Senator Lott said, "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." He later apologized, but has been rebuked and asked to resign as the Senate majority leader by his own political party for his outrageous comments. The only person that I personally know who has supported Senator Lott is Black Republican Congressman J. C. Watts of Oklahoma. Let me share with you some comments that I ran across in article by "The BLACK CoMMentator" on Watts' support for Lott: "...Of no use whatsoever are the likes of J. C. Watts, the retiring Black Republican Congressman from a white district in Oklahoma. He, too, is insane, an undiluted, reflective Uncle Tom who cannot even begin to speak without projecting himself into the thought patterns of...insane white racists!" Biting and stinging words. I personally believe that all views should be heard, no matter how distorted or whether I agree with them or not. But again, the question arises - did he (Senator Lott) say what others in Congress are really thinking? When it comes to the matter of race and race relations, let me assure you that the Republican Party is not the only party with its share of questionable characters. Democratic Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, a former official of the Ku Klux Klan when he was a younger man of 26 (Byrd is now 82), recently said during a talk show (spring 2001) when he was speaking about the importance of harmony among different race groups: "My old mom told me, 'Robert, you can't go to heaven if you hate anybody.' We practice that," the senator recalled. "There are White Niggers. I've seen a lot of White Niggers in my time - I'm going to use that word." "The fact that Byrd felt free enough to make that kind of statement about any group," NAACP President and CEO Kweisi Mfume told the Associated Press, "suggests that any progress he has made on race is relative." My point. These statements from some of our political leaders should illustrate to us that things haven't really changed when it comes to racial relations in our nation, in spite of what we consider progress and that some of us are economically better off. We need to be aware of our history, both socially and economically, and remember that one of the reasons our fraternity was established was to unite men of culture, as well as the environment under which our fraternity was founded. We have to be responsible for our own fate, strive to accomplish our fraternity's fundamental purpose, and live for true brotherhood.

Visit Our Virtual Museum The Middle Western Province Virtual Museum is slowly but surely growing. The site is designed to preserve and display documents, photos and other articles of historical significance about chapters in our province, as well as our province-at-large. For this project to be successful and grow even more, we ask each of you to examine your archives in search of items that would be appropriate for inclusion in the museum. Many chapters are not yet represented here. Our highest priority at the moment has to do with the kinds of items that MUST be digitized for permanent keep before they might be destroyed by deterioration or otherwise lost forever. Obviously a work in progress, we will eventually provide "captions" for items currently archived in our museum that are not self-explanatory. As you submit items for inclusion, we ask that you provide an accompanying explanation where appropriate. For instructions on how to submit documents and photos in a suitable format, please contact our Museum Curator at Museum@KAPsiMWP.com.
University of Virginia Frats Cleared in Blackface Incident By Any Argetsinger Washington Post Staff Writer December 3, 2002 Two historic fraternities at the University of Virginia were cleared by a student panel yesterday of "disorderly conduct" accusations stemming from a Halloween party at which guests were photographed wearing blackface. The panel, convened by the university's Inter-Fraternity Council, determined that the actions by Kappa Alpha and Zeta Psi fell within the bounds of constitutionally protected speech and could not be punished. Yet the panel also strongly condemned the behavior of those at the party for "an apparent historical blindness and lack of sensitivity" and recommended that both houses impose education and internal discipline programs for members. "Although we can't find them guilty because of the First Amendment, clearly this has damaged the [fraternity] system and our reputation," said Philip Trout, a senior who is president of the Inter-Fraternity Council. However, the council can only urge -- not require -- the houses to take such measures. The discovery of the party photos, which had circulated for several weeks on the Internet, sparked an uproar on the Charlottesville campus, where students already were embroiled in a debate over how well blacks are integrated into the university's social life. The photos showed at least three costumed students with their faces painted black or brown at a party co-hosted by the two fraternities. One man was dressed as Uncle Sam; two other men were dressed as tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams. Many students came forward to decry the costumes as racist and offensive throwbacks to the days of minstrelsy. But others wrote letters to the campus daily newspaper defending the costumes as innocent fun -- one recent graduate maintained that the tennis costumes simply paid homage to "popular icons in our culture" -- and criticizing the backlash as political correctness. The national organizations of both fraternities sanctioned their U-Va. chapters after college officials discovered the photos Nov. 18. Kappa Alpha lifted its suspension of its chapter after two days, when leaders determined that none of its members were involved in the incident. Zeta Psi, though, remains on probation pending a disciplinary hearing with the national organization. National leaders for both organizations said they would follow through with the Inter-Fraternity Council's recommendation for diversity education. "This is a new one for us, but we're going to make sure that message gets delivered very clearly," said George McNeillie, director of public relations for Zeta Psi. He said that the chapter had run a full-page apology ad in the campus newspaper and that members had distributed fliers at a recent football game denouncing the practice of wearing blackface. Although many students called on the university administration to take action against the fraternities, campus officials said any investigation or sanctions would be handled by students as part of a policy of student self-government. The Inter-Fraternity Council panel also found both fraternities guilty of allowing minors to drink alcohol. Both were sentenced to a month of social probation that will be lifted if they do not incur more violations this academic year.

Spring C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference The Spring C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference (CRWLC) will be held on February 7-8, 2003, hosted by the University of Missouri Chapter, the Delta Omega of Kappa Alpha Psi, in Columbia, Missouri. The Delta Omega Chapter Polemarch, Brother Jeffery Oliver Beckham, Jr., and the Polemarch of Columbia Alumni Chapter, Brother Robert Duke Weaver, are looking forward to showing us the hospitality of both of these recently reactivated chapters.
The weekend will begin with a Cluster Initiation on the evening of Friday, February 7th, which will take place on campus at the Gaines-Oldham Black Culture Center at 813 Virginia Avenue. Chapters interested in participating in that initiation should familiarize yourselves with the Membership Intake Flow Chart and the 2002 and 2003 Kalendars of Events. The clock is already ticking, brothers! The conference will begin on Saturday morning (the 8th) in Tate Hall which is situated next to the Jesse Hall Administration Building. The conference registration fee is $25 and includes lunch which will be served at Reynolds Alumni Center. A map of the campus may be viewed at http://map.missouri.edu/francis_quad.html. All work and no play? On the contrary, there will be a social event on Saturday night which will be announced as you check in at the conference. So brothers should come ready to party. The host hotel for the conference will be the Drury Inn in Columbia at 1000 Knipp Street (off I-70 and Stadium Drive). For reservations, call 573-445-1800 and mention that you are with the "Kappa Alpha Psi Leadership Conference" to get the special room rate of $59.99 plus tax. This rate is for rooms that will accommodate from one to four people. IMPORTANT NOTE: Some chapters of our province have not yet complied with the requirement that specific officers must attend the CRWLC in order that the chapter may be certified or retain its certification. The officers who must attend the conference are the Chapter Polemarch, Vice Polemarch, Keeper of Records, Keeper of Exchequer, Membership Intake Chairman, and Undergraduate Chapter Advisor. These officers may attend either the Fall conference that was held on October 19th in Wichita or the upcoming Spring conference on February 8th in Columbia. So that there will be no confusion about your chapter's compliance, a full list of the members who registered for the October 19th conference may be viewed at http://www.kapsimwp.com/Reports/CRWLC0210.html. If your chapter's required officers were not in attendance as registered delegates at that conference, they MUST be in attendance as registered delegates in Columbia. It is important to note that mere "attendance" at the Fall conference without "registering" for that conference does not suffice. We know, for example, that there were some members who were at the conference in Wichita but who did not register or pay the $25 registration fee for the conference. In those instances, without proper registration and payment of the registration fee, they were NOT counted as having attended the conference. You should check YOUR chapter's list of those who were in attendance to determine which officers MUST travel to Columbia for the next conference. Questions regarding the Cluster Initiation may be directed to the Province Polemarch at Polemarch@KAPsiMWP.com. Questions regarding which officers of your chapter were counted as registered delegates at the Fall CRWLC may be directed to the Province Keeper of Records and Exchequer at KeeperOfRecords@KAPsiMWP.com. Questions regarding the agenda for the conference may be directed to Brother Glenn L. Ellis, our Province CRWLC Chairman, at CRWLC@KAPsiMWP.com. Questions regarding directions, local access or other logistics may be directed to Brother Andre Thorn, Delta Omega Chapter Advisor, at 573-882-4088 (W), 573-424-2695 (C), or DeltaOmegaAdvisor@KAPsiMWP.com.
Evans Appointed to the Grand Chapter Planning CommitteeBrothers of the Middle Western Province, It's an honor to inform you of the privilege to represent you on the Grand Chapter Planning Committee (GCPC). As past General Chairman for the 73rd and 74th Grand Chapter Meetings, I know there is much work ahead for the GCPC as preparations are made for your arrival at the 76th Grand Chapter Meeting in Charlotte. Speaking of the 76th Grand Chapter Meeting of this great Fraternity, it's just a little more than six months away, after that Kappa Alpha Psi will very quickly turn it's attention to the Middle Western Province and preparation for the 77th Grand Chapter Meeting. As required, proposals from cities vying to host this historic event (i.e. Denver, Kansas City and St. Louis) have been submitted to the Grand Board of Directors. A selection is expected in February 2003, at their upcoming meeting in Tampa, Florida. Accordingly, the Middle Western Province will aggressively begin to move forward to develop recommendations for an exciting, diverse and flexible Grand Chapter Meeting agenda for 2005. To that end, I have proceeded to identify some of the preliminary areas where we may begin to focus, ultimately culminating in a thorough and comprehensive Middle Western Province planning strategy to ensure our readiness in 2005. Historically, at the 76th Grand Chapter Meeting, the host of the 77th should be highly visible through a series of coordinated marketing activities. Typically, the largest event is a reception by the host chapters and other host city supporters. Or there may be other ideas worth pursuing. Another marketing strategy used in the recent past, with good success has been the creation of marketing merchandise. Generally, these marketing items have been available for sale or strategic distribution at the preceeding Grand Chapter Meeting. As an example, Atlanta did an excellent job in early marketing of their Grand Chapter Meeting with a limited edition lapel pin and coin. Additionally, revenue to support costs was generated by the sale of the items. Development of recommendations for the 77th Grand Chapter Meeting "logo" and an appropriate "theme" are some other early planning activities we will explore. Shortly, I will be recommending to Province Polemarch Pruitt a committee structure and planning activity schedule. Upon his assignments, we will begin coordination of meetings, developing plans, implementation, etc. Success in 2005 will require the intense involvement of many but the commitment and participation of all Brothers of the Middle Western Province. So, please be forthcoming with your ideas! I look forward to working with you and thank you Province Polemarch Pruitt for the opportunity!
Yours in the Bond,

General Counsel Report
In January 2003, we will honor our Founders, the principles for which they stood and the ideas on which they built our noble clan. This is a great time to reflect on who we are as individuals and the contribution we make to society and the Fraternity. We must always keep in mind that we are men of achievement and honor and never do anything to cause a blemish on the integrity of Kappa Alpha Psi. We should conduct our daily lives in a way that would cause any mother who casually observes what we do to say, "I want my son to become a Kappa as soon as he is able." So during this holiday season, give thanks to the creator of us all because it is through God's help that we have come this far and will prosper in future endeavors. Keep our purpose indelibly etched in our minds and know that WE are the future of Kappa Alpha Psi and what WE do determines what OUR Fraternity will look like for years to come. You see "It matters not how straight the gate, how charged with punishment the scroll. (We) are the masters of (our) fate, (we) are the captains of (our) soul." Have a happy holiday season, brothers. I love you all. Until next time, I am . . .
