History
- In 1921, St. Louis Alumni members, J. Jerome Peters and Leon Steward were delegated to create solutions that would assist young men with funds and guidance. Leon Steward, a Y.M.C.A. Secretary, proposed a program to be called Guide Right. The purpose was to assist high school seniors to choose and pursue useful careers, consistent with the fraternity's purpose of achievement. The program was immediately adopted on the local level, to the extent of providing scholarships to needy and talented participants. At the Twelfth Grand Chapter Meeting in 1922, Guide Right was officially adopted as the fraternity's National Service Program.
Objectives of Guide Right
- To inspire service in the public interest
- To develop leadership skills
- To refine self-image, self-esteem, social skills and environmental awareness
- To afford the less fortunate youths a respite from the drudgery of the streets
- To inform youth of the value of higher education
